Family Fun + Fun Friends and Stir Gently For a Great Saturday!! . . . . part 2

1. We were in a room that seemed to be storage for all kinds of equipment. We had
to get a picture of these little gadgets for tweaking when needed. Can you believe them? A little boy's dream.
2. This Mary still freezing with John's
jacket over hers. We weren't ev
en in the wind yet. That was impressive when it finally hit us! Guess sometimes it is nice to be so warm blooded. It all felt good to me!
1. John has such a quiet, funny sense of humor. When we got on this first elevator, he told us that it was the second highest one in Arizona. When I asked where the highest one was, he pointed up. 2. John standing next to his "baby". This little collection of electronics runs a whole bunch of stuff at the scope. There are all kinds of racks like this that run one part of the location and they are all coordinated besides, truly amazing operations. This rack runs the building when it moves, as in around the pillar that actually holds the scope. You really can't feel anything when it moves unless you can see something that is not moving. 3. The highest elevator in Arizona! It has the rosy light so that your vision is not effected when you step out into the dark . . . and I thought it was someone being imaginative in the lighting . . . too much HGTV I suppose!

1. Here are the mirrors up there on top of the mountain. 2. One of two big old bearings that help move the scope. 3. "My" Jon and Mary Little standing at the base of the scope and next to one of those bearings. The tolerances for all of this equipment is so close that it is beyond most of us how it can be done. The metals would have to be so hard to stand up to to weights and pressures huge . . . amazing!

1.
This is from a catwalk about half way up and looking down at part of the scope. There was still lots above our heads. 2. Mary and I got our giggles when John & Jon whipped out their little flashlights. You can tell they are "mature", there was no obvious competition as to who had the smallest and brightest light. It sounds like their family is not that much different than ours. Christmas means better portable lighting, or at leas
t different. I find my self looking for stocking stuffers by July every years. ; >D 3. The boys are checking out some major lightening suppression here. Seeing that it is all over 10,000 ft., sounds like a good idea

1. "My" Jon and Mary standing at the base of the scope. The size is unbelievable and when you consider the tight tolerances in all of this monstrous gadget, it is just beyond my brain. Guess it takes a whole bunch fun, interesting guys like John Little with wonderful little twists in their thinking to make this happen! 2. This poster gives a good illustration of all the pictures that I took that don't make much sense because the scope is SO huge that you can't get much in the camera lens at one time. It is all quite breath taking when you see what has been accomplished up there and get to watch it moving so smoothly and silently.

As interesting and fascinating as this all was, the best part was spending time with some good friends we have sorely missed!
