Our October Birthdays

Twenty nine years ago, we had a little boy. On Sunday, all I could do is think about him. I hoped he got my letter and card, but late in the day, I found out that he hadn't gotten them yet. I sent them one day apart so that he would get them one at a time to break up his routine. Hope they made up for it when he did get them. Makes me wonder how long it takes him to get his mail, I thought there would be plenty of time. We'll have to have his birthday cake and all that when he gets home.

Today, on the other hand was Sarah's birthday. She was due on Rob's third birthday, but true to
to Huish tradition, she came late . . . . and has been taking her won sweet time ever since ;-) She is her daddy's little girl. I 'm so glad that I was able to talk to her, several times, sing happy birthday to this morning with Jon and spend the evening with her, just being girls. Sometimes that is the best, just unhurried time with someone you love. It was fun looking at clothes and learning that I am not so bad at picking cute ones now. Sarah has such a cute little figure and she can wear all the styles that looked awful on me. All she got from me is neck and above . . . she got the rest of that cute from her dad's side!

I have been reading a lot of novels, biographies and watching Little House on the Prairie lately. I always feel so thankful that we live in a day and age when we can stay in contact with each other. I have been reading the autobiography of John Widstoe's mother. When she left Norway, she had no idea if she would ever return again or not. She didn't have any contact with her family until she and her sister returned years later as missionaries.

When I read old journals or family histories, I often read of children marrying, leaving and the parents never know if they have grandchildren or if their own kids are even alive. They would send letters with whoever they could and hope that they would actually get delivered. Even when they had more "reliable" mail service, they couldn't be sure that the carriers would be left to do their jobs.

Even with all the spam and weird stuff that seems to get by my blocks, I am so glad that we have the Internet. Phones keep us in touch, especially cell phones. Often when I was on fire a few years ago, we had no phone service, the old cell was a nice perk out there. When Jon & I camped the last time, we had to drive to where we could get a signal, but then again, we could touch bases with the kids.

I am so thankful I have been sent to the earth in this day and age that my kids choose to stay in touch. Life is good.
